The Number 8 is actually a very important position in rugby. Quite often they are the team’s heaviest ball carrier, the perfect combination of power and speed. The number 8 is an incredibly powerful player and so they are often the first ball carrier from the scrum or from a lineout.
They need to be able to break the defences line and so their role is incredibly crucial. While it may not always seem like it, the number 8 also has an important job in the scrum. They need to be powerful to help to drive the scrum forward. Not only that but they also need to be smart enough to pick the ball up when the ball reaches the back of the scrum.
Having good hands is important for a number 8. When they are able to break through the defensive line, a successful offload is crucial to a teams attacking success as this gives the team a great chance of scoring. Having a number 8 with good hands makes your attack a lot more menacing.
As well as being powerful in attack, the number 8 is also powerful in defence. They have to be one of the top tacklers for a team. They need to be the one driving the opposition back as they are incredibly powerful.
Being the primary ball carrier is certainly the most important role. More recently we have seen Number 8s become more involved at the ruck, winning turnovers wherever possible. But they have to be a good ball carriers or else they will not make the impact on the team the position is supposed to.

They are also likely to play a very similar role to the wingers which mean they are also often in a lot of space on the outside, making breaks. These fullbacks tend to be very good at finding space which means they often finish on a lot of running metres.
It can also be a winger that finishes with the most metres made. The winger tends to find themselves in space on the wings quite a lot. This means they make a lot of running metres and usually find themselves at the top of the running metres table.
Often you will see a number 8 run quite a lot. This is because they are the primary ball carrier of the team and so make a lot of metres. But it is unlikely they make more metres than one of the back three.
